The conference covers all areas of economics (micro, macro, econometrics, game theory, experimental economics, political economy, labour economics, empirical economics, public sector economics, economic history, etc.).

It takes place over two days and has presentations as its main focus. The number of participants has in the past few years been limited to about 200 to maintain an informal atmosphere. All the delegates at the SMYE, selected anonymously in a ‘double blind’ process by a Programme Committee, are given the opportunity to present their research. The presentations are sub-divided into between six and eight streams which run concurrently.
